About the Department of Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry at the National Institute of Technology, Silchar, was established in 1977. Since its inception, the Department of Chemistry has taught basic and engineering-oriented chemistry courses (theory and practical) to B. Tech students of different engineering disciplines. The Department also formally started the Ph.D. program in Chemistry in the 2005-2006 academic session. 2009, the department finally started an M.Sc. in Applied Chemistry to fulfill regional students’ needs. Over the years, the Department of Chemistry has established itself as one of the best departments at NIT Silchar by actively participating in students’ development and productive research of societal needs.
The Department of Chemistry has awarded 60 M.Sc. and 9 Ph.D. students in the last three years. Currently, 19 students are pursuing master’s degrees, and 38 research scholars are pursuing doctoral degrees in the Department. Most of our alumni are employed in government colleges and companies in Assam and India. Many of our M. Sc. graduates are pursuing Ph. D. in prime research institutes in India, such as IISc, IITs, etc.
Besides quality teaching, our faculty members are devoted to high-profile research activities in diverse areas of Chemistry, including Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Crystal Engineering and Chemosensing, Energy and Environmental Chemistry, Material Science, Photochemistry, Protein chemistry, Chemistry of Renewable Energy, Polymer Chemistry, Spectroscopy, Nanomaterials and Composites, Computational Chemistry, Electrocatalysis, Supramolecular and Coordination Chemistry. Currently, the Department has three ongoing projects funded by DST, CSIR, etc. Many externally funded projects have been completed successfully in the past. Our faculty members regularly publish research papers in journals of national and international repute. In 2022, the Department of Chemistry was granted the DST-FIST fund in the Level B category as a landmark recognition of our achievements and for facilitating academic excellence to a higher level. The Department has laboratories and modern instruments such as GC-MS, BET, UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, Photoluminescence Spectrophotometer, FTIR, Microwave, Centrifuge, Rotatory evaporator, Muffle furnace, Sonicator etc.. Process for procuring more sophisticated/state-of-art types of equipment have been initiated, which will further cater to the needs of post-graduates and research scholars of our Department.
Vision of the Department
The vision of the Department of Chemistry is to establish a model center of excellence in the field of education in the frontier of chemistry. The primary focus will be to produce highly competent graduates and post-graduates capable of working in the rapidly changing chemical science and technology field throughout their lives.
The mission of the Department
The mission of the Department of Chemistry is to impart quality education through knowledge and updated information in basic and applied chemistry related to science and technology. This will provide budding scientists and engineers with a comprehensive understanding of chemistry and enable them to face the world’s future challenges.
