About the Department
The Department of Chemistry at the National Institute of Technology Silchar, Assam, was established in the 1977–1978 academic session, when the institute was known as the Regional Engineering College (REC), Silchar. Since its inception, the department has played an integral role in the institute’s academic programs by offering fundamental as well as engineering-oriented chemistry courses, including both theoretical and laboratory components, to undergraduate B.Tech. students. With a commitment to advancing higher education and research in chemical sciences, the department formally introduced its Ph.D. program in Chemistry in the 2005–2006 academic session. Subsequently, to meet the growing demand for postgraduate education in the region and to further strengthen its academic and research activities, the department launched the M.Sc. program in Chemistry in the 2009–2010 academic session.Over the years, the department has grown steadily in its academic and research capabilities, fostering an environment that promotes quality education, scientific inquiry, and innovation. As of 2026, the department comprises 10 faculty members, 36 M.Sc. students, and 45 research scholars, reflecting its vibrant academic community and strong commitment to postgraduate education and research. The department continues to strive for excellence in teaching and research while contributing to the advancement of chemical sciences and addressing contemporary scientific and technological challenges.
Our Vision
To establish the Department of Chemistry as a centre of excellence in education and research in the frontier areas of chemical sciences. The department aspires to nurture highly competent graduates, postgraduates, and researchers equipped with scientific knowledge, critical thinking, and innovative skills to excel in the rapidly evolving fields of chemistry, science, and technology.
Our Mission
The mission of the Department of Chemistry is to impart high-quality education and research training in fundamental and applied chemistry through contemporary knowledge, innovative teaching, and scientific inquiry. The department is committed to promoting interdisciplinary research across diverse areas of chemical sciences, including organic and inorganic chemistry, physical and computational chemistry, solid-state chemistry and crystallography, materials and nanomaterials, catalysis, energy and environmental chemistry, spectroscopy, electrochemistry, natural products, and medicinal chemistry.Through a strong integration of teaching, laboratory training, and research, the department strives to develop scientific competence, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities among students and researchers. It aims to encourage innovative and sustainable solutions to emerging challenges in energy, environment, healthcare, advanced materials, and chemical technology, while preparing graduates and researchers to contribute effectively to academia, industry, and society.
