Why Chemistry@NIT Silchar?
Scope
Established in 1977, the Department of Chemistry at the National Institute of Technology Silchar has grown into a vibrant centre for teaching and research in chemical sciences. Since its inception, the department has been actively involved in providing fundamental and engineering-oriented chemistry education, encompassing both theory and laboratory courses, to B.Tech. students across various engineering disciplines.
The department expanded its academic activities by introducing the Ph.D. program in Chemistry in the 2005–2006 academic session, followed by the M.Sc. (in Chemistry) program in the 2009–2010 academic session. Today, the department provides a stimulating environment for postgraduate education, doctoral research, and interdisciplinary scientific collaboration.
As of 2026, the department comprises 10 faculty members, 36 M.Sc. students, and 45 research scholars. The department is committed to developing skilled graduates and researchers capable of pursuing successful careers in academia, research institutions, industry, and other scientific and technological sectors. Graduates of the department have progressed to higher studies and research at leading institutions, including the IISc, IITs, NITs, and other reputed universities and research institutes in India and abroad.
